I am reviewing qualifications for a bunch of students from University of Waterloo, who have applied for Project Coordinator position I am hiring as co-ops. In the cover page of one of them, this line made me laugh: "I am a strong candidate for this position because I am completely bilingual in French and English, I love to travel, I am accustomed to relocation, and I am a class G driver in Ontario."
Sometimes, we are afraid of doing a task, while after finishing, it turns out to be really simple and fun. I guess not only we should teach this reality to kids, but also remind ourselves from time to time. I wanted to do an investigation on outsourcing some of our software development work in Argentina. Something that I had no idea however after spending two ours I had a pretty report ready. So it's really true that " eye is afraid , but hand does it".
Train friends are people you see everyday on the train, usually sitting in the same wagon at the same place. Those who take train to work know what I mean. After a few days of having the same routine, you get used to going to the same place everyday, seeing the same faces at exact same seats. Train friends are the ones you say hi to. You may know or not know their names, because one time you talked and asked the names but forgot and now you don't want to admit you've forgotten their names...
The cleaning lady who cleans the company in the evening seems to get angry when cleaning my cubicle. Each morning I find my stuff scattered around, monitors displaced and even some stuff on the floor! But today she has gone too far. My little cacti pots are hurt. It's a war!
A few days ago, on the way to train I was listening to the radio. In the news, they said some officer who was being investigated on a murder he might have done years before and was to testify about the case was killed in a driving accident. The way they presented the news seemed that they were not sorry about his death. Then in the same news episode, there was one about an accident that apparently someone had deliberately hit a police horse and they had to put off the horse because of his injuries. The interesting thing was that they seemed really sorry about this incident, specially how it must have been hard for the officer to terminate the poor horse. Anyways, the reaction on this two events was interesting for me.
You know what is not funny, more even stupid? A search on search engine and it asks "did you mean .... ?" And when you would say yes I actually meant that, it'd give you a page stating nothing was found!
When do you call a job, secure? What are the measurements? Does it even have any meaning? Do you have to rely on your job security?
Friends. It's hard to say if having a lot of friends is good or not. Good friends are rare. Very rare. The ones that come to you when you need them. The ones that comfort you in trouble. The ones you know you can count on them. The ones that you miss if they are gone.
Today, after a long working day, we went out to do some shopping. As the cashier was finishing our stuff, Rose noticed some nice looking lollipops. She asked for them. I asked what color. She was not sure so she thought "ummm... ummm... RED!" So she got. Mommy asked her " Now what do you have to say to daddy?" She returned to me and said "Sorry daddy!!". I guess lately we expect her to apologize for the wrong things she does... Maybe too much...
According to Rose, the correct name of Gary, the snail pet of Sponge Bob is Scary and she insists on that. I don't exactly know why, maybe it's really scary for her.
Sometimes we talk about the movies and that how many times we've watched one and for what reason. Personally, my record is about 30 times. I have seen "13th Warrior" about that many times. Others include "The Matrix" which I have watched about 10 times. I can not say why it's just that I love these movies.
Today, I'm running with some of friends in Toronto Bay Street Rat Race and my number is 5674. This is a charity event... Like the one we did about 2 weeks ago with Nastaran and Siemens colleagues of her , biking for 2 hours. That was a pleasant experience cycling through the downtown highways with 13000 other people.
